Welcome to the latest edition of V.E.O.T.R. where I will shine a spotlight on the discography of Mark Stewart and the groups and projects that he has been involved with.

The Pop Group, from Bristol, were one of the many British groups who formed in 1977, a part of the U.K. punk "explosion," inspired by the likes of Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned.

This band, however, set itself apart from other bands in the movement with their exceptional and intense sound that combined elements of free-jazz, disco, funk, dub-reggae and avant-garde experimentalism, fused with the provocative lyrics and commanding presence of vocalist, Mark Stewart. The accompanying imagery, fold-out, collage posters and dada meets agitprop style album and promotional artwork as radical and unrelenting as the music was.

Along with bands like The Slits and Public Image, Ltd., The Pop Group instigated the evolution of post-punk. Punk had given rock music the kick in the ass that it needed at the time, a reaction to "Arena Rock" and a shot of adrenalin to MOR banality, but even the new, exciting sound had grown stagnant and predictable to many discerning listeners who were craving something new and inventive. So these bands brought a new artistic adventurousness to punk's raw energy and d.i.y. ethos.

Early material was produced by the U.K.'s dub / reggae mixmaster, Dennis Bovell. These releases included the single, We Are All Prostitutes (1979 Rough Trade)(We Are All Prostitutes was reissued in 2016 by Freaks R Us), and the amazing debut LP, Y (1979 Radar Records). Y was reissued my Mute in 2019, including a beautiful repress of the She Is Beyond Good And Evil 12" single, (originally released 1979 Radar Records).

The Pop Group - Y (1979 Radar Records / 2019 Mute)

In spite of being foundational to the musical blueprint of many "Bristol Sound" artists like The Wild Bunch, Massive Attack, Tricky & Portishead, these records are probably considered to be obscure by many Americans, as it was virtually ignored by the mainstream, here. However, The Pop Group have been hugely influential, here and worldwide, to artists such as Nick Cave (The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds), Mike Watt and Minutemen, Steve Albini, Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and Matt "The Simpsons" Groening, who invited them to perform at his 2010 All Tomorrow's Parties event, sparking the reformation of the band, nearly 30 years after their 1981 split.

The Pop Group - She Is Beyond Good And Evil (1979 Radar Records)

1980 saw further releases from the band, including a split single with The Slits, In The Beginning There Was Rhythm / Where There's A Will There's A Way (1980 Y Records / Rough Trade). The two bands shared a drummer at the time, as well as manager and Y Records owner, Disc O'Dell.

The Slits / The Pop Group - In The Beginning There Was Rhythm / Where There's A Will There's A Way (1980 Y Records / Rough Trade)

The second The Pop Group LP, For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? (1980 Rough Trade / Y Records), expanded on the experimentalism and complexity of sound, never dull, often extreme, pushing the barriers and defying norms at every opportunity and incorporating diverse elements such as a "remix" of The Last Poets "E Pluribus Unum (One Out Of Many)" featuring the group's abstract, avant-garde funk layered on top of the original, proto-reality-rap record.

Glaxo Babies guitarist, Dan Catsis, would replace Underwood on bass for this album.

Another fairly esoteric, yet hugely influential LP,to those in the know, For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? was reissued by Freaks R Us in 2016

The Pop Group - For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder (1980 Rough Trade / Y Records 2016 Freaks R Us)

The compilation, We Are Time (1980 Rough Trade / Y Records) features demo versions and some early live recordings. It was reissued in 2014 by Freaks R Us.

Y Records

After the break-up, guitarist John Waddington joined Maximum Joy, bassist Simon Underwood formed Pigbag, guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Gareth Sager and drummer Bruce Smith (who had also played with The Slits) would form Rip Rig & Panic with Neneh Cherry (and sometimes her step-father, Don Cherry). Mark was credited for engineering on the 3rd R.R.&P LP, Attitude (1983 Virgin).

Bruce Smith, who currently plays with The Pop Group as well as with Public Image, Ltd. for the latest active lineup, also worked with producer Adrian Sherwood on the debut LP by New Age Steppers, which Mark contributed vocals to for "Crazy Dreams And High Ideals." This was to be the first LP in the On-U Sound Catalog.

Check out New Age Steppers - Bandcamp and their forthcoming reissue / compilation / collection, Stepping Into A New Age 1980-2012.

Mark continued to work with On-U Sound and it's collective of uniquely creative punks & dreads. The initial incarnation of Maffia was Charles Eskimo Fox on drums, Evar Wellington on bass, Desmond 'Fatfingers' Coke on keys and, of course, Adrian Sherwood at the mixing desk (with assistance from Mark). This album and others from Creation Rebel, Singers & Players, Dub Syndicate and African Head Charge helped to establish the young Sherwood as not just any reggae producer, but as one who would boldly expand the genre of dub and one who's masterfully crafted mixes could compliment artists as disparate as Lee "Scratch" Perry and Depeche Mode, bringing a sense of excitement and unpredictability to every effort.

The first 12" single was a rendition of William Blake's "Jerusalem," with "Liberty City" and a different version of "High Ideals & Crazy Dreams" from New Age Steppers debut.

Heavy dub reggae is the backbone of the debut Mark Stewart & The Maffia LP, Learning To Cope With Cowardice (1983 On-U Sound), but there is nothing typical about this one. Sonic barriers were pushed to the extreme with no holds barred during the recording of this punk / dub manifestation. Distortion, feedback, the sounds of tapes rewinding and random cut-ups were incorporated into the mix. Caterwauls and cries are the vocal m.o. and the subject matter varies from the tedium of a lifetime consumed by menial work, to the unspoken truths of multi-national global elitists pulling all of the strings in our world.

Mark Stewart & The Maffia - Learning To Cope With Cowardice (1983 On-U Sound)

This one was reissued by Mute in 2019 with a bonus LP, The Lost Tapes, featuring instrumental versions, edits and remixes from the album.

"Jerusalem" was featured on the 1985 On-U Sound compilation, Pay It All Back Vol. 1, as well as Sherwood / Kishi YamamotoTom Silverman produced, "Hallelujah."

Various Artists - Pay It All Back Vol. 1 (1985 On-U Sound)

Voice Of Authority, an Adrian Sherwood alias / studio project, released Very Big In America Right Now (1984 Cherry Red / On-U Sound) which included the Mark Stewart co-produced "Short Intro / Knock The House Down," a dub version of his tune, "Blessed Are Those Who Struggle."

Voice Of Authority - Very Big In America Right Now (1984 Cherry Red / On-U Sound)

For As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade (1985 Mute), Doug Wimbish (bass), Keith LeBlanc (drums) and Skip McDonald (guitar) of Sugarhill Gang Band, also known as Tackhead or Fats Comet, were enlisted as The Maffia and "industrial hip-hop" was born.

A robotic voice at the start of the album advises the following... "We are going to program you to take your place in society," then aural brutality ensues. The heavy funk tracks, interrupted by explosions, distortion and raw scratches, are given new depth, virtually unrecognizable from the versions of the rhythms that appear on Fats Comet 12" singles (the method of recycling a "version" of a rhythm track, using the same basic instrumental for multiple different songs, was commonplace in reggae music, originated by Jamaican engineers and producers, and eventually became a more common practice for producers and remixers outside of the world of dance-hall).

Mark Stewart - As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade (1985 Mute)

From that LP came the single, Hypnotized (1985 Mute) which shared a rhythm track with Fats Comet's Dee Jay's Dream / Eat The Beat (1985 World Records) 12" single. The b-side features the title track from the LP, "As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade," which shares a rhythm with Fats Comet's Zoom Zoom / Bop Bop single.

The compilation, Myths 1: Instructions (1985 Sub Rosa), features "The Wrong Name And The Wrong Number" by Mark Stewart & The Maffia, a reworking of "Bastards" the song was also on the CD pressing of the On-U Sound compilation, Pay It All Back Vol. 2. A compilation called You Bet We've Got Something Against You (1986 Cathexis / Pleasantly Surprised) features "Passivecation Program."

Mark Stewart - Mark Stewart (1987 Mute)

The following LP, the eponymous Mark Stewart (1987 Mute), also included Tackhead as The Maffia. The first tune on the album recycles Sugarhill Gang's "Rappers Delight" aka an interpolation of Chic's "Good Times" drum and bass break, albeit at about half the original tempo, as well as the Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel lyric "Survival, only the strong can survive."

"Hell Is Empty" is a version of Kieth LeBlanc's "Object / Subject" from Major Malfunction (1986 World Records). There is a creeping cover of David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Forbidden Colors" on side 2. The final song, "Fatal Attraction" utilizes Donna Summer "I Feel Love" arpeggiations from Giorgio Moroder, with much greater intensity than the original.

The Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1" samplingStranger Than Love (1987 Mute) was released as a 12" single with an early appearance by Smith & Mighty for the dub mix of "Stranger" plus LP version of "Survival" on the b-side.

David Asher of The Process and D.A.B. (David Asher Band) was a guest on the Duburbia Podcast, which I host. Both of us being huge Mark Stewart fans, these Maffia albums eventually came up in the discussion.

Here's what David said... "He's a unique artist because he has a real evolution and you can follow it... it kind of goes along with what you, maybe, guess might be his mind - but it starts out real paranoia of the state... is how it begins (his journey), and then, over the next couple of albums the focus sharpens, like a laser beam to a real, personal, paranoia - it changes, it shifts to the personal paranoia and then eventually, to me, it spreads out, I mean the paranoia. It's a beautiful thing when it shatters because it kind of spreads out across the heavens. I don't know if that makes sense, but it reminds me of, like, satellite dishes, like a cry going out through the universe on these giant speakers. You know, Mark is just brilliant and there's nobody quite like him, either..." he went on, "I guess what I'm trying to say is - his paranoia becomes universal." I don' think that I could describe it any better way.

"Anger (Specially Commissioned)" was featured on the compilation, Funky Alternatives 2 (1987 Concrete Productions), the laughing Vincent Price sample is, indeed, a "thriller."

Various Artists - Funky Alternatives 2 (1987 Concrete Productions)

Along with Adrian Sherwood & Gary Clail, Mark helped to remix San Francisco industrial noise-makers, and Michael Franti of Spearhead's first group, The Beatnigs, alternative hit, Television (1988 Alternative Tentacles).

The Beatnigs - Television (1988 Alternative Tentacles)

Various Artists - Pay It All Back Volume Three (1991 On-U Sound)

Metatron (1990 Mute), continued with Wimbish / LeBlanc / McDonald lineup of The Maffia, and included David Harrow on keys for several tracks, including "These Things Happen," which was also featured on the compilation, Pay It All Back Vol. 3 (1991 On-U Sound).

Mark Stewart - Metatron (1990 Mute)

Another from Metatron was the funk-metal tinged, Tackhead driven single, Hysteria (1990 Mute), with the electronic, thumping, four-on-the-floor beating, "My Possession / Dub" on the b-side.

Mark Stewart - Hysteria (1990 Mute)

Strange Parcels & Bernard Fowler covered Mark's tune, "High Ideals & Crazy Dreams" in a funk-soul-dub style for the compilation, Pay It All Back Volume 4 (1993 On-U Sound).

Various Artists - Pay It All Back Volume 4 (1993 On-U Sound)

Various Artists - Pay It All Back Vol. 5 (1995 On-U Sound)

Pay It All Back Volume 5 (1995 On-U Sound) features the house-rocking techno cut, "Digital Justice (Dub)," the vocal version of which can be found on Control Data (1996 Mute). Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald played on the 1996 double vinyl LP with additional instrumentation by Simon Mundey.

Mark Stewart - Control Data (1996 Mute)

"Scorpio," from this album, features the late Style Scott on drums and it also appears on the compilation, Pay It All Back Vol. 6 (1996 On-U Sound).

Various Artists - Pay It All Back Vol. 6 (1996 On-U Sound)

Mark's song, "None Dare Call It Conspiracy" was brilliantly remade by Style Scott's Dub Syndicate, on the LP, Ital Breakfast (1996 On- U Sound) as "The Corporation" with vocals by Akabu.

"Welcome To Liberty City" was included on the compilation, Roots Of Innovation - 15 And X Years On-U Sound (1996 On-U Sound).

In the early 2000's, interest among a new generation of record collectors and rare-break aficionados was growing for post-punk, no-wave and industrial records and many reissues and compilations came out of this. The Pop Group's "She's Beyond Good And Evil" can be found on the compilation, In The Beginning There Was Rhythm (2001 Soul Jazz Records). A Mark Stewart / The MaffiaThe Pop Group compilation called Kiss The Future (2005 Soul Jazz Records) was also released.

The compilation, Chainstore Massacre (2002 On-U Sound) features Mark Stewart "The Lunatics Are Taking Over The Asylum," a tune that will later appear on the LP, Edit (2008 Crippled Dick Hot Wax!), which also had production by Kevin Martin aka The Bug.

Various Artists - Chainstore Massacre (2002 On-U Sound)

Edit (2008 Crippled Dick Hot Wax!) featured production by Kevin Martin aka The Bug, as well as Nick Coplowe (Mutant Hi-Fi)and Philipp Quehenberger. Mark and Ari Up cover The Yardbirds' "Mr. You're A Better Man Than I" in a future-dub style and fashion. The bluesy "Secret Suburbia" features vocals by Adrian's daughter, Denise Sherwood and Samiah Farah. "Radio Freedom" is another banger off of this one.

Two songs on Ghetto Priest's debut LP, Vulture Culture (2003 On-U Sound), were produced by Mark Stewart, "Masters Of Deception" and "Strange Cargo."

Mark Stewart - Children Of The Revoliution / Nothing Is Sacred (2011 Future Noise)

Children Of The Revolution / Nothing Is Sacred (2011 Future Noise) was a Record Store Day release, featuring a raw, gritty, The Bug produced, T-Rex cover on the a-side and on the b-side, guests Eve Libertine and German duo, Slope, bring the noise.

Mark Stewart - The Politics Of Envy (2012 Future Noise)

The following year, The Politics Of Envy (2012 Future Noise) dropped, with an a-list of guests to boot: Kenneth Anger, Keith Levine, Martin 'Youth' Glover, Richard Hell, Lee Perry, and Factory Floor.

Stereotype (2012 Future Noise) is a 2 record set of remixes, including one from Daniel B / Front 242 and another remix and dub version by Chrissy Murderbot.

There is a 12" single from the album with Primal Scream called Autonomia (2012 Future Noise), as well, with JD Twitch and Pinch remixes. "Autonomia (Electro Edit)" can be found on the EP, Experiments (2012 Future Noise) with "Robo Want 1 & 2" plus an instrumental of "Gang War," the Lee Perry guest track.

The Pop Group triumphantly returned with their first newly recorded LP in 30 years with Citizen Zombie (2015 Freaks R Us), on which the band managed to create something fresh and new, seemingly seamlessly after such a long hiatus.

The Pop Group - Honeymoon On Mars (2016 Freaks R Us)

On Honeymoon On Mars (2016 Freaks R Us), production duties were split. Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell returned to the boards for four tunes of the album, with The Bomb Squad / Public Enemy producer, Hank Shocklee, working with the band for the first time.

For me, on a personal note, this is extremely meaningful because in the formative years of my teens, Public Enemy albums, especially It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (which I listened to nearly every day from 16 years old until I was around 20), and the first three Mark Stewart & The Maffia LPs were equally as influential, thought provoking, exciting and rebellion inciting. These are some of the records that have planted ideas into my mind and changed the way that I see the world, and have made a huge impact on my life.

The Shocklee
tracks feel just right on the album,  a tale of dystopian paranoia with a breakbeat called "City Of Eyes," a down tempo banger, "War Inc." and the closing track "Burn Your Flag" all bring the noise and energy of the classic P.E. sound.

Little Axe - London Blues (2017 Echo Beach)

Skip McDonald's solo project, Little Axe latest LP, London Blues (2017 Echo Beach) was co-written by Stewart for 5 of it's 10 songs. the dub-blues hybrid exemplifies the diversity of On-U Sound's musical lexicon.

The latest in the series, Pay It All Back Vol. 7 (2019 On-U Sound) has Mark's tune, "Favour" and "Ghost Heart" by Denise Sherwood, co-written by Mr. Stewart.
