Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions II Mixcloud

CULTCHA Clash Outer National Global-Community-Radio

This is the second edition in the reboot of V.E.O.T.R. (see original video episodes Here).
This time around I will dissect and discuss another mix from my (all-vinyl) Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions series, volume II, which was recorded in 2011.

After a year or so of listening to the first mix, i felt ready to embark on the journey of compiling and mixing of the sequel. It's a multi-track mix, as opposed to a straight "live" mix so I engaged in some studio-trickery along the way.

Again, I will make this disclaimer, the title is my own description of the sound, some artists may take the label "Industrial" as a pejorative, or a purist would say that Industrial is exclusively Throbbing Gristle and music that was released on their Industrial Records. I'm not attempting to classify or categorize any of the artists included here, I'm using the term as a personal interpretation as more of a reaction to the music industry itself than any actual distinct "sound."

As always, links have been included (highlighted) where possible, as it is our goal at CULTCHA Clash Outer National to educate and entertain.

Wild Paarty Sounds, Volume 1
Setting things off are two selections from On-U Sound. The first of which is "Afghani Dub" by The Mothmen (Durutti ColumnSuns Of Arqa members), taken from the Wild Paarty Sounds compilation (Adrian Sherwood's mix of the song, "Afghan Farmer Driving Cattle" from their 1981 On-U Sound LP, Pay Attention).
The Mothmen - Pay Attention!

African Head Charge -
 Off The Beaten Track

The next song is "Release The Doctor" from 1985's Off The Beaten Track, the fourth LP by African Head ChargeBonjo Iyabinghi Noah has used A.H.C. as a vehicle for experimentation in ambiance and blurring the line between Reggae and World music and is still productive today.

Simply Red - Infidelity

Adrian Sherwood Lee "Scratch" Perry's 1987 "Massive Red Mix" of Simply Red's "Love Fire" maximizes the drum and bass for optimal play in the dancehall.

Dub Syndicate -
 Research & Development

Dub Syndicate are next in the mix with "2001 Love (Iration Steppas Mix)" 12" single version from the Research & Development LP blended with Sizzla's "Solid As A Rock" from his 2002 album, Da Real Thing.

Sizzla - Da Real Thing

23 Skidoo - Language

23 Skidoo make an appearance, this time with "Language (Version)" off of the 1984 Language 12" on Illuminated RecordsIt's another percussive dub-funk jam with Sketch slapping the bass strings.

Meat Beat Manifesto - Storm The Studio

"Re-animator Part 4" from Meat Beat Manifesto's monstrous 1989 debut LP, Storm The Studio, is blended, here, with Jeb Loy & The Oil Wells "Things That Made U.S. Great" from the Wild Paarty Sounds compilation.

Welsh band, LLwybr Llaethog (The Milky Way), enter the mix next with "Ai Bod" from their 1988 Side Effects Records LP, Da! The band fuses sounds of (Post) Punk, Industrial, Hip-Hop, Dub Reggae, House and Techno. They also, notably, released a ROIR cassette, Mewn Dyb (In Dub).

Grace Jones - Nightclubbing

The following tune is "Nightclubbing," by the legendary Grace Jones (written by David Bowie & Iggy Pop) backed by Jamaica's #1 rhythm section, Sly & Robbie off of her 1981 LP, Nightclubbing.

World Domination Enterprises follow with their remake of the LL Cool J hit, "I Can't Live Without My Radio," from the 1988 12" single and LP, Let's Play Domination, on Product Inc. It's sloppy, playful and fun punk-noise with a beat.

Consolidated - Consolidated!

Next is "Assimilate The Information" by Bay Area group, Consolidated on the 1989, Consolidated! EP. They utilized loops and samples that were common to those on Hip-Hop records but the finished product was a much noisier-industrial kind of sound, with leftist politics spewed through megaphones and extremely thought-provoking visuals for those fortunate enough to have seen them live.

"Bless Those" by Little Annie (Annie Anxiety-Bandez) is from the On-U Sound 10" Disco Plate and is also featured on Little Annie's 1992 Short And Sweet LP. Produced by Adrian Sherwood, the rhythm was provided by Doug WimbishSkip McDonald and programming by David Harrow.

African Head Charge -
Drums Of Defiance

Next in the mix is another tune from African Head Charge, this time "Drums Of Defiance," from the 1998 Drums Of Defiance album featuring Professor Stretch, lays down an organic world-rhythm that i used here as the foundation to blend "Walking In Your Footsteps" by The Police, a little popish and mainstream for this series, but a great band and a good tune with a message.

Johnson Engineering Co. -
 Floorslammer90

Following, is "Slammer," an Electro-Industrial-Funk jam by the U.K.'s Johnson Engineering Co. from the Floorslammer90 12", released by German label, Pinpoint in 1990.

Gary Clail & On-U Sound System- Beef

Another On-U Sound tune comes next, "Beef," the animal-rights anthem from Gary Clail & On-U Sound System featuring Bim Sherman. Played here is the 12" single version, from the 1989 LP End Of The Century Party.

Pop Will Eat Itself - Bulletproof

Continuing with the Adrian Sherwood productions, the next track is "Bulletproof (Mile High Mix)" by Pop Will Eat Itself from the 1992 12" single, "radically remixed for On-U Sound."
