Vinyl Encounters of the...Rewind!
The Mixes: Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions VII (Return To On-U Sound Version)
Mixed & Written by Selecta J-Cut
This is the seventh edition in the reboot of Vinyl Encounters of the...Rewind! (see original video episodes Here). This time I'll be breaking down another of my all-vinyl mixes, 2015's Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions VII - Return To On-U Sound Version. This time the focus is, again, on the production and remix work of Adrian Sherwood (Industrial Funk / Dub Abstractions IV was the first Sherwood / On-U Sound exclusive that I put together).
2015 saw the release of two On-U Sound compilations, Sherwood At The Controls, Volume 1: 1979-1984 and Trevor Jackson Presents Science Fiction Dancehall Classics, so I worked songs from both of them into the mix. I tried to cover ground from old to new, from cultural-roots-dubs of early On-U Sound groups like Singers & Players, Dub Syndicate and African Head Charge, building up to 120 BPM-plus club / dance floor-fillers and remixes for artists like Shriekback, KMFDM and Depeche Mode.
Many of the artists included in this series are active now, links have been included (highlighted) where possible, as it is our goal at CULTCHA Clash Outer National to educate and entertain.
The first tune comes from the 1981 debut by African Head Charge, My Life In A Hole In The Ground and is called "Far Away Chant." Prince Far I's lyrics, filtered and affected nearly beyond recognition, become a part of the hypnotic rhythm of Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah's mystified drumming.
The next song is Doctor Pablo & Dub Syndicate's melodica-driven take on "Dr. Who?" off of the 1984 LP, North of the River Thames.
"Quante Jubila" is from the 1981 debut by Singers & Players, War Of Words and features the vocal stylings of Prince Far I.
"Revolution" is by Bim Sherman, from the 1982 album, Across The Red Sea. An alternate version was featured on Singers & Players 1982 LP, Revenge of the Underdog as "Resolution (Pt. 2 / Version 2)."
"One In A Billion (Version)" is from the bonus 7" with 2001's Dub Syndicate LP, Acres Of Space, on Style Scott's Lion And Roots label. The original vocal features roots & culture dancehall singer, Luciano.
"Nuclear Weapon" is another Prince Far I vocal cut, taken from the 2015 compilation Sherwood At The Controls, Volume 1: 1979-1984. It shares the version with the following tune, "Stand Firm" from Noah House Of Dread's 1982 album, Heart.
"Water The Garden" is a Singers & Players song with Prince Far I, originally released on 1982's Revenge Of The Underdog, this particular version is the remix featured on Pay It All Back Volume 2 from 1988.
"Knock The House Down" is from Sherwood alias Voice Of Authority's 1984 Very Big In America Right Now and it provides the rhythm track to the following, "Blessed Are Those Who Struggle" by Mark Stewart & The Maffia on the recently reissued - with lost tapes, crucial, post-punk-dub-noise album, 1983's Learning To Cope With Cowardice.
Next, I juggle "Hi-Fi Gets A Pounding (Parts 1 & 2)" and "(Part 3)," both from Dub Syndicate's 1982 debut, The Pounding System (Ambience In Dub). Drummer Style Scott (The Roots Radics, Creation Rebel) was to be a regular On-U Sound collaborator and musical partner up to his tragic death in October, 2014.
"Hole In The Ground" is from 1983's At Home With The London Underground, their debut album of avant-dub post-punk perfection.
Lee "Scratch" Perry makes an appearance, with "Lee's Garden" and "All Will Be Well In The Garden" next, respectively from On-U Sound LP's, 2008's The Mighty Upsetter and Dubsetter from 2009.
"The Show Is Coming" is from 1984's Tunes From The Missing Channel, The fourth LP by Dub Syndicate, it provides the riddim for Lee "Scratch" Perry to chant away every hypocrite, parasite, duppy and vampire on "Train To Doomsville" off of 1988's Pay It All Back Volume 2 compilation.
Next, I play with 2 copies of African Head Charge's "Throw It Away," from their incredible, fourth album, released in 1985, called Off The Beaten Track.
"Wadada (Means Love)" follows, from Dub Syndicate's 1991 Stoned Immaculate LP on which they utilized Prince Far I vocals and the keyboard talents of ex-The Clash / P.I.L. member, Keith Levine.
Once more, we hear from The Upsetter, this time "You Thought I Was Dead" is off of 1990's From The Secret Laboratory
The tune was also featured on 1991's Pay It All Back Volume Three.
"Reaching The Badman" is a Singers & Players tune from 1981's War Of Words, this one features Bim Sherman, one of the unique voices often heard on On-U Sound productions, up to, and beyond, his death to cancer in 2000.
The dub of this tune, "Badman Version" was released on the 2015 10" War Of Version Disco-Plate.
After that, is "Learning To Cope With Cowardice," the title track of the 1983 LP by Mark Stewart & The Maffia.
The next one is "As I Lie In Your Arms" from the 1987 single, As I Lie In Your Arms by Annie Anxiety Bandez (Little Annie), on One Little Indian Records.
"Deutsches Bier" is from Pankow's 1989 album, Gisela.
The next tune, "Killing" is from the 1989 KMFDM LP, Don't Blow Your Top.
From 1986's On-U crew-production, Uncarved Block by Flux, is "Nothing Is Not Done."
"The Wrong Name And The Wrong Number (DJ Battle)" is by Mark Stewart & The Maffia, this recording was from 2015's superb On-U Sound compilation, Trevor Jackson Presents Science Fiction Dancehall Classics.
"Big Bondage (Kinky Sex Wet Mix)" follows, from Italian band Rinf's 1987 single, Bang Bang (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).
Nine Inch Nails debut LP, Pretty Hate Machine, came out in 1989. Sherwood and Keith LeBlanc produced and mixed "Down In It," taken from the Down In It 12" single.
Chicago Industrial-Dance group, Ministry, worked with Sherwood on their monstrous 1986 LP, Twitch. The next tune, "Just Like You" is from that one.
Cabaret Voltaire's "No One Here," is from the Sherwood produced 1987 LP, Code.
Up next is "Addiction (First Dose)" by Skinny Puppy from their 1987 Addiction single.
Shriekback's "Mistah Linn He Dead" is from the 2015 compilation Sherwood At The Controls, Volume 1: 1979-1984 and originally appeared on Shriekback's 1984 single , Hand On My Heart (Remixes).
From the b-side to 1984's Master and Servant (U.S. Black & Blue Version) single, Depeche Mode's "Are People People?" save for a sample lasting only a split-second, is virtually unrecognizable as a remix to the original, "People Are People."
Italian EBM group, Pankow, return with their mutant-funkified Prince remake, "Boys And Girls (Hard Dub)," from their 1988 double a-side, Play The Hits Of The Nineties
The final tune of the mix is "Let It Take You There," by Maximum Joy, taken off of Sherwood At The Controls, Volume 1: 1979-1984 and originally appeared on their 1982 debut LP on Y Records, Station M.X.J.Y.
That concludes both the mix and this edition of Vinyl Encounters of the...Rewind! Please check out more music from Adrian Sherwood and On-U Sound Records.
I hope that it's been enjoyable, thanks for checking it out and look out for the next one at www.cultchaclash.com.

Again, I will make this disclaimer, the title of this series is my own description, some artists may take the label "Industrial" as a pejorative, or a purist would say that Industrial is exclusively Throbbing Gristle and music that was released on their Industrial Records. I'm not attempting to classify or categorize any of the artists included here, I'm using the term as a personal interpretation as more of a reaction to the music industry itself than any actual distinct "sound."
